Many synthetic chemicals used in commercial cosmetics, skincare and household cleaning products are known to be toxic - some are completely untested, while others are known to cause cancer, yet are still legal for manufacturers to use in small, 'safe' quantities in products we slather on our skin or hair.
Often these products claim to be 'natural', however just because they include SOME natural ingredients, doesn't mean that everything in the product is safe. Don't be fooled by products containing 'fragrant oils' or 'essences': these are chemical 'versions' of natural scents - synthetic substances that, aside from carrying none of the therapeutic properties that pure Essential Oils are known for, may also carry ingredients that at best have no toxicity data available, and at worst are known carcinogens.
Most commercially available 'fragrant' candles are made with these synthetic 'fragrant oils', as well as paraffin wax, which is a by-product of the petro-chemical industry, and is widely believed to give off toxic fumes and soot when burned. Tests completed in the US in 2001 revealed that paraffin wax contained 11 compounds which are classified as dangerous, some even classed as carcinogenic.
The majority of commercially available incense also use cheap synthetic 'fragrances', alongside other inferior ingredients such as coal powder, grease & used motor oils, melted tyres & inner tubes, and even albumen powder derived from the blood of slaughtered animals, which is used as a binding agent.
