History of the Business
The founding and current owner Delano Reiss established Bumper Action Amusements in April 1972. From humble beginnings in the shed at the rear of 16 Bridport St. Albert Park with the first machine, Rocket by Williams, Bumper Action was born. With no particular plan and a lot of drive and hard work Bumper Action began to pay off.
But the bright lights of lively St. Kilda beckoned. The next stage up the ladder was a single garage at the rear of 72 Park St. St Kilda. This was where the business took off. Sales went non-stop to the home market and the first operating location was started at the local milk bar.
Next stop was a shop opposite the Brighton Yacht Club. This was opened as an amusement centre and took off immediately. Business was brisk with all the local kids and yachties coming in whenever they could and it became a social meeting spot.
Rear of 82 St Kilda Rd, St Kilda was next, and then the opening of 1 Fitzroy St, St Kilda, Mr Del Amusement Centre. Within a few months another amusement centre opened at 83 Fitzroy St Kilda, Wild and Wonderful Amusements. Both of these centres ran for over 20 years before being sold very profitably. Business ran from 82 St Kilda Rd for 10 years before the move to 1 Vale St, St Kilda.
Vale St (2500 sq ft) was absolute luxury compared to 82 St Kilda Rd (450 sq ft) and business was going full steam ahead. The business ran from Vale St for 15 years when it became obvious that much larger premises would have to found.
The business moved to the current address, 562 66 City Rd. South Melbourne, in 1997. 12,000 sq ft was just what was needed for the huge stock of all types of Amusement machines being sold. From this address, Bumper Action has become the market dominator within Melbourne and Australia for the sales, service, parts supply, and hire of amusement and table sport machines. In addition, our regular auctions have become very popular with buyers from both interstate and overseas attending.
Today our product range has increased dramatically and incorporates a vast range of coin-operated equipment for both home and commercial use. The Spare Parts and Logistics Division under the management of David is bigger, better and more organised than ever. The Sales and Operations division is run under the watchful eye of David Stein, who has over 30 years experience in the industry (and he only 40).
Alan runs Administration and Accounts. Party Hire and IT is run by Mike, who has great organisational skills and gets the job done anywhere, any time from corporate to back yard functions.
Bumper Action is the most respected name in the Melbourne market. Through excellent business and great service Del has created a strong brand, which leads the market in the areas of business in which it operates.
Brief background on Del
Del Reiss was born in Sydney to an American Mother and Danish Father. After 1 year he went to England after a short stay in the USA. He lived with his parents in the United Kingdom for 21 years where he was educated at Clevedon House in Yorkshire and Gordonstoun in Scotland.
Subsequently, Del went to Leicester Polytechnique after which he worked in London for 1 year. He travelled by motorbike around Europe and emigrated to Australia from Naples in 1972. He founded Bumper Action in 1972 and has continuously run the company to this day.

With almost all new homes now being built with large family and rumpus rooms, Bumper Action is at the forefront of supply to the domestic market. All bases are now covered in this field from Pinball and Retro classic games sales to collectable art and memorabilia to everything for the games room, soccer air hockey, pool tables, table tennis, electronic darts, and electronic basketball machines.
Backed up by service and spare parts divisions for full customer satisfaction, Bumper Action also serves as a supplier of goods, parts and service to the industry itself acting as wholesaler, distributor and retailer.
Spare Parts: Has a full inventory for a growing home and commercial market, the largest in Australia. Also covers retail accessories and collectables.
Party Hire: Currently we provide private party hire, corporate hire and venue hire. The company rents jukeboxes, pinball machines, soccer/air hockey tables and a wide range of other machines.
Venue Hire: Where the Party/function comes to us. Fully equipped showroom stocked with games and complete with kitchen facilities make us a sought after location for any occasion.
Service: Full service department for repair and restoration of all amusement machines. Covers all outside customers as well as maintenance, restoration and service to all Bumper Action equipment.
Pinball Art: High quality reproduction and original framed art and back glasses. A wonderful selection to enhance your home or office or replace a broken Pinball backglass
Pinball Faith: A once a month fun competition night for the general public and customers. After an absence of more than 20 years, Bumper Action Amusements reintroduced the grand PINBALL PARLOUR, and once neglected pinball fans rejoiced.
For the past 8 years on the first Friday of every month, Bumper Action Amusements has been running PINBALL FAITH, where fans and families have been enjoying unlimited play on up to 40 pinball machines under one roof.
The night includes knockout competitions, all you can drink, eat and play. Plus prizes, cash rewards and trivia games for the die-hard purists. Children are entertained on the driving games and simulators, as well as soccer and air hockey tables. The action kicks off at 7pm and goes non-stop until 11pm.
To keep the night fresh, each month brings something new to the event. The first night saw Tommy the movie played on the big screen and dancing to the jukebox.
On other occasions the night has had: special guest speakers on pinball restoration and repairs, Austin Powers / Playboy / Sopranos theme nights, chat rooms, an ever changing pinball line up and Bunny Girls serving drinks. All of this has ensured an exciting and rewarding event each and every month. The event provides an atmosphere where fellow pinball enthusiasts can meet and talk pinball, from history to where to get that hard to find part, and families can come with their children in a safe environment to enjoy a wonderful night together. Through word of mouth and limited advertising the congregation is increasing every month and with continued support will remain a very special night out for all the regulars and newcomers looking for a night with a difference.
All inclusive pricing for the night is Adults $20; under 15 $10 - Children under 6 free.
