Pronounced: cat-ee-ots Origin: a personal acronym
Inspiration: I have been doing cross stitch for 30+ years, having started in primary school. I have even had work accepted for display at the Royal Easter Show (but that was a while ago now).
Catteots came about from trying to purchase something "different" to stitch as a Christmas present for a very special teacher - specifically, a set of alphabet magnets. I found Australia had very little to offer in the 'stitchables' range and my frustrations had me searching the world. It was then I saw how I might be able to help all cross stitchers, particularly those in Australia, to create the project they would like and to make it affordable.
Charts, kits, notions, stitchables including towels, baby bibs, afghans and acrylics (eg coasters) are just some of the items that Catteots will have listed. Other items will be added as time goes on...
I had a lot of queries for, and now stock plastic canvas and related items too.
I have listed 'E'lse where but I think I will much prefer it 'O'ver here! |
About Me Pets: Yes, I have a cat "Elbow" and a dog "Pepper".
|
Elbow we inherited from the neighbours, who had a dog that didn't like cats, we started to befriend the cat, and "you don't own a cat, a cat owns you" came into effect, and he moved in.

Pepper was born 25th November, 2005; The kids had been hounding me (no pun intended) to get a dog, and I finally weakened in January 2006. Pepper's parents - Mum was a blue heeler, and Dad was a Shitzu (I think he used a milk crate!). She was the runt (last born and smallest) of the litter of 8 puppies.
On 19 Feb 2007, Pepper wasn't well, appearing to limp on her back leg, so I took her to the local vet, who gave her an injection of steroids to reduce the swelling, and said to come back tomorrow, on an empty tummy for some x-rays. I rang the local vet about 5 hours later, and said that she had seriously deteriorated, and described the symptoms. I was told that I would need to see a specialist, as now it was looking like she had severe spinal/disc damage. The next day I took our "Pepper Pup" to the specialist.
After extensive blood test, x-rays, MRI and a spinal tap, on 22 Feb 2007, Pepper was diagnosed with "steroid responsive tremor syndrome", or "white shakes".
The vet specialist, let me bring her home on a huge amount of medication, not giving us much hope at all. Basically, to let her die at home with us. She was in NO pain; When Pepper walked, it looked like a drunk baby learning to walk, with no motor skill co-ordination at all. That was on the Friday. I had to ring the specialist on Monday, to let him know how she was, and take her back in on the Wednesday. The specialist was very surprised that she had a slight improvement (less tremors and shakes), as he didn't think she really would improve. He had even emailed a college in America to confirm the diagnosis and treatment, which he showed me.
Bit by bit Pepper has slowly improved, but it appears that she is going to be on medication for the rest of her life, and I will be using part of the 'handling fee' to help pay for it.
The vet said the only reason she has survived is all the TLC - hand feeding of ice to get her to drink, hand feeding of very finely cut home cooked food, carrying up and down stairs so she could go to the toilet, covering with blankets, keeping the whole house quiet, no sudden movements or loud noises and generally lots of love and full time nursing for the first 3 weeks.
One of the side effects of the medication could be depression, and did Pepper get depressed when on the very high dose. We still have to avoid getting her overtired, overexcited or stressed. Sometime in September, she hadn't had a tremor or shake for about a week, and was a lot more lively.
Update: By the end of 2007, Pepper was off her medication - and still is! However, with the large amounts & for the long length of time she was on it she has now developed a major allergy .... to fleas!
Pepper needs to be bathed and treated with a flea preventer on the back of the neck every two weeks but every 7 -10 days in the summer. Also, antibiotic ointment has to be applied to Pepper's back as she scratches her back on anything she can, to the extent that she can take some skin off her back. That part of the 'handling fee' I was using for medication is now being used for these treatments.
Pepper also can not have tinned or processed dog food as the preservatives, etc. set her off again, so her diet is roo mince and steamed chicken and whatever vegies we are having and ice cream, 'vegie' toast, rockmelon, yogurt etc
We taped Pepper's progress, daily, during the first 7-10 days after she was diagnosed with 'white shakes', so if anyone is interested please contact me and I will send you a link.
