The Medium is now acrylic or colored pencils
I've been drawing since my Mother stuck a pencil in my little toddler fingers. A very good artist herself, my Mom never wondered if I would follow in her footsteps with art; rather she wondered what area of art I would chose. During my younger years said choice was people, but eventually wildlife and dogs became my real love __ people just don't appreciate wrinkles, gray hair, or side saddles, etc.
First there were pencils, then paints, then pastels, and finally several years ago I found my nitch with woodburing, or pyrography to those of you who need to be exact. And, 8-to10-hour days were normal for me. Now, however, I have returned to painting, or colored pencils.
Although my all my work is always "straight from my own imagination," that is not the case with most doing woodburning. Most often, woodburning is done by way of tracing and/or copying from a pattern of some sort. And, that's okay, as actually woodburning is a form of wood carving, and copying and/or tracing is most allowable in such a category.But, even my woodburning was strictly one-of-a-kind originals.
If my Mother ever caught me copying and/or tracing, I would never hear the end of it! She has told me numerous times, "A real artist always does his, or her own work, Darlene!" Far be it from me to cross a true readhead __ that's my Mom:)
I eventually taught woodburning for a few years, which was fun, rewarding, and certainly a learning tool. However, it just didn't allow me the time I wanted to create original artworks using my own imagination and a woodburning tool.
I surely am not the best of the artists out there. I do, however, have a very good imagination __ something I tried diligently to put into each of my students' heads. Again, most doing woodburning trace and/or copy their work, but I wanted those coming to me for teachings to do more. The desire was for them to be able to at least use their own imaginations for trimmings on the patterns I'd created especially for them.
As of July of 2007, woodburning became a thing of the past for me. My lungs could no longer take the fumes caused by said craft, and I cannot deal using a mask. So, after more than 15 years away from painting with acrylics I've returned. Colored pencils have also cranked my scooter.
Those of you wondering where my user ID came from __ sassysays __ that was the heading I created many years ago on a column used on my pages when I was news writing. I still love to write, but it takes a back seat to my artwork, which comes second only to my family __ even the four-legged member.
My husband of many years was what I considered a "Prince Among Men." He was always my best critic and strongest supporter __ if only everyone could have someone so kind, loyal, and special. NOTE: I lost my beloved on June 20, 2008, to congestive heart and kidney failure. Just before he died he promised to be my special angel, watching over me always __ I'm counting on that, as he lived by his word.
I still have an adorable little 8-pound Shih-tzu that our Daughter formerly insisted was always treated best! Actually, said Daughter__ our most precious and darling __ definitely knew even more spoiling in her life!
NOTE: We lost our most precious Daughter September 22, 2006 to a second sudden heart attack. She was much too young. Our Angel spent her life and career helping everyone she could, rather two-legged or four. I'm certain she will continue to spread her love while assisting everyone who asks for her help. Only now she will do so from above.
I am still here, and it's hard, but there must be a good reason __ "Someone" upstairs evidently has further plans for me. I like to think it's partly to take care of my little dog, and to continue working diligently to improve my artwork __ and me, too, of course!
